VISCOSA

Kõrgessaare, Hiiumaa, June 2026

Location

Viscosa Culture Factory is Hiiumaa's largest building complex – established in 1912 as an artificial silk factory, later used as a fish cannery, and now reimagined as a diverse cultural center full of music, theater, art, education, and festivals. The complex is being restored bit by bit, equipped with modern infrastructure, technology, and support services, while preserving its industrial look and atmosphere.

Event

2026. The opening of the year's summer season was a day filled with concerts, performances, exhibition openings, lectures, and tours, attended by hundreds of people of all ages. Viscosa turned to Hull Siil with a request to create an edible installation that would fit the event.

Brief and solution

The briefThe solution
Gift shopAn edible display suitable for the gift shop that works in synergy with the opening event.A wall-mounted white disk with a 130 cm diameter, featuring a 3D black Viscosa logo in the center. Four horizontal shelves above and below the logo hold a total of 74 lollipops – and other items in the future if needed. The disk serves as both a shop sign and a product shelf, offering lasting value long after the event ends.
VIP roomA display for the VIP room where guests could freely take lollipops during the event.A tabletop white stand with a 3D black Viscosa logo, holding 30 lollipops. Designed to be visible in a large room and draw attention without competing with the surrounding activities.
Lollipops400 lollipops with four different designs in this season's Viscosa colors, featuring a back sticker with a QR code leading to the summer event calendar.Four designs, two different flavors – lemon and raspberry. Identical at first glance, with the flavor listed on the back sticker alongside the QR code.

The task was based on a single day, but the solution is designed to last.

Both installations will remain permanently at Viscosa – the disk on the gift shop wall and the smaller stand on the gift shop counter. An object initially created for an event becomes something that creates recognition.

Work process

The booking for the edible installation reached us in March, we received the first actual inputs in early May, and the opening day was June 20th, so the project was completed from start to finish within a month and a half.

Since Viscosa also wanted to use the installation to promote the opportunities offered by their Creative Studio, both objects were made locally in Hiiumaa.

Challenges that aroseHow we solved them
The original idea was to cut the 3D letters from 5 cm thick plywood, but issues arose locally with material supply and technical capabilities. In collaboration with the head of the Creative Studio, we decided to 3D print the letters instead – this decision solved both challenges and provided an opportunity to demonstrate the powerful printers available on-site.
The drawing wasn't examined closely enough, and the disk was initially cut too large – this threw the entire design out of balance.Close communication with the makers allowed us to react quickly, cut the disk to the correct size immediately, and refinish it. This decision guaranteed the right look and impact for the display.
A day before the event, the disk had not yet been mounted on the wall. When we arrived on the island, the disk wasn't ready for the lollipops despite our agreements. We spoke with the local workmen and got the disk in place on time so the candies could be arranged before the audience arrived.

The space

The large disc immediately found its perfect spot, greeting every visitor the moment they entered the room. Positioned against a wall of crumbling plaster, just a few steps away from a contemporary painting exhibition starting in the adjacent room – it strikes a contrast with its clean, graphic quality, looking as though it had always belonged there.

The disk is large enough to be seen across the entire room and draws people in to examine it. The lollipops placed on it are details that carry the message forward.

During the opening event, the disk and lollipops remained intact as a whole – those who wanted to buy one could take a candy from the smaller stand placed on the counter. At one point, it seemed as if every child was walking around with a lollipop in their mouth.

What is the purpose of the lollipop?

A lollipop purchased from the gift shop serves several purposes simultaneously:

  • Bearing the Viscosa logo/slogans and colors, it is a small piece of brand identity that goes home with the owner.
  • Due to its uniqueness, customers often photograph the candy before or while eating it – these images spread on social media and among friends, carrying the logo forward even without a direct reference to the location.
  • The QR code on the back sticker directs people straight to Viscosa's summer events page, so someone might end up there almost by accident and discover a concert, performance, or exhibition worth returning for.
  • For guests who have experienced the essence of Viscosa, the lollipop is a small souvenir that doesn't take up much space and isn't permanent. It's suitable both as a memento and as a gift.
